A brief documentation of visual stories of everyday streets.

EVERYDAY STORIES

FRUGALITY

We encouraged participants to pursue storytelling with whichever means they had available. It was a conscious decision to steer clear of professional DSLR cameras and other expensive gear. Great stories don't need funding.

STORYTELLING

In a visually cluttered world, participants were encouraged to seek out stories rather than purely aesthetics. They learned to use tools borrowed from design research like people shadowing, among others.

Assignments were designed around the concept of get-out-of-the-building. With suggestive worksheets, participants went about exploring the streets of Bangalore in search of visual stories.

THE INTENT

What is beauty? Is it an abstract that must be sought or can there be beauty in the mundane? The Everyday Project is an attempt to find beauty in the everyday and ordinary. Urban streets are often cluttered yet culturally rich, city people may be curt yet resourceful - there are many layers to unfold the narrative of charming cities.

The project kick-started as a creative storytelling crash course for young adults from vulnerable backgrounds. The workshop was hosted at Dream A Dream, a non-profit based out of Bangalore focused on skill-building for the youth. Over the course of 3 weekends, 7 young adults came together to tinker with visual storytelling using the lens of their mobile phones. Their muse? The streets of Bangalore.

THE SANDBOX

Select photographs as documented by the participants through the course of the workshop.

"One of our assignments required us to document people's stories. People we'd never met.

It was interesting to try and get to know the lives of strangers you see every day. The street food vendors, the corner shop lady, the community workers. Surprisingly, they were so open to sharing their lives with us."

THE TEAM

Meet the cool kids on the block. These boys showed up with all the enthusiasm for 3 weekends and filled each session with overwhelming curiosity.

While few were photography enthusiasts, the others had never explored the medium beyond selfies.

Whenever I thought of a good photograph, I would immediately think of mountains, a lake, you know the usual. I never thought I can find a noisy street inspiring. A bunch of lemons can be beautiful too.
